Worth knowing
J. W. Valentijn & Zn.; cover, cost and conditions
J. W. Valentijn & Zn. comes from Ter Aar in the Netherlands, from the Woudsedijk in the village of Langeraar. According to the Alcyone archive, ships have been built on this spot since at least 1731. Johannes Willem Valentijn, who lived from 1888 to 1937, took the site over in 1910 and first built cargo vessels for carrying peat and for inland shipping. After 1924 the yard turned to pleasure craft only, and it flourished in the sixties and seventies. It made its name with flat-bottomed steel yachts drawn by the naval engineer Max F. Gunning, whose Alcyone combines the qualities of a traditional Dutch shallow-water vessel with those of a seagoing yacht. Later the business moved on to maintenance and repair.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts: the Alcyone II at 11 metres and the Cormorant at 8.8 metres. The Alcyone II appears with build years from 1967 to 1993 and the Cormorant from 1979 to 1993, so neither reaches the most recent build years. Gunning drew four types in all: the Alcyone I, the Alcyone II, an enlarged Alcyone II and the Cormorant. The yard history dates the first Alcyone II to 1950 and the first Cormorant to 1962, while our data start with build years 1967 and 1979. Some two metres separate the two, the Cormorant being the more compact design.
Steel is forgiving in many ways, but it rewards a careful survey. On a used Valentijn yacht, ask for ultrasonic thickness readings of the hull plating and look hard at the places where water lies: under the cockpit, along the bilge and behind built-in joinery. The archive describes the yachts as manageable single-handed and low on upkeep. The flat bottom lets them dry out on soft ground and reach water where deep keels cannot go. Rigging on boats of this age is often older than it looks, so check when it was last renewed.
