Worth knowing
JPK Composites SARL; cover, cost and conditions
JPK Composites is based in Larmor-Plage in Brittany, in the Morbihan department. Jean-Pierre Kelbert, a former member of the French windsurfing team and twice European champion, founded the business in 1992, at first to build funboards in epoxy sandwich. When many board makers moved production to Asia in the early 2000s, JPK changed course and began building sailing yachts meant to cruise as well as race under IRC. The JPK 960 appeared in 2003, a boat for round the cans as much as offshore races. The cruising models are easy to spot by the FC suffix, standing for Fast Cruiser, while the others simply carry JPK and a number.
Our model records hold ten designs, nine sailing yachts and one motor yacht, with build years from 2001. Six of them run into the most recent build years: the JPK 39 FC, JPK 45 FC, JPK 1030, JPK 1050, JPK 1180 and the Nomad 40. The JPK 10.10, JPK 10.80 and JPK 38 Fast Cruiser are listed until 2024, and the JPK 960 until 2025. The smallest is the JPK 960 at 9.6 metres, the largest the JPK 45 FC at 13.77 metres. The Nomad 40 is the only motor yacht and measures 11.98 metres. Five designs fall between ten and eleven metres, five are longer.
A JPK is built to be sailed hard, and many have raced shorthanded offshore. On a used boat, the sail wardrobe and the rig are worth as much attention as the hull: count the sails, check their age and the condition of laminates, and inspect the spreaders, rigging terminals and bowsprit fittings. Look at the rudder bearings and the keel attachment, as racing loads and occasional groundings show up there first. Electronics on these boats are often extensive and sometimes added in stages, so check that everything talks to everything else. A full logbook of races and passages tells you a lot about how the boat has been used.

production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the JPK 39 FC, JPK 45 FC, JPK 1030 by JPK Composites SARL and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Nomad 40 by JPK Composites SARL series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
