Worth knowing

Kaiser; cover, cost and conditions

Kaiser Yachts was based in Wilmington, Delaware. The man behind it, John R. Kaiser Sr., known as Rex, was a lawyer who turned to building boats. In the early sixties he worked with the designer Thomas Gillmer on the Allied Seawind, a 30-foot glassfibre yacht. He then went on to build his own line of cruising boats, all sharing a family look: long keel, heavy displacement, a squared-off transom and a generously laid-up hull. The Gale Force followed from 1977, conceived for passage-making far offshore. You know one by its cutter rig with a staysail on the inner forestay, its centre cockpit and the rudder hung on the transom.

Our model records hold a single design for Kaiser, the Gale Force 34 sailing yacht, listed with build years 1976 to 1982. The source gives 1977 as the start of production, so our records begin one year earlier. Length is entered as 9.3 metres. According to the source the waterline runs to a little over 27 feet, the beam is 10.5 feet, the draft just over five feet and the displacement 18,000 pounds. None of the build years reaches into recent production, which means every Gale Force 34 on the water today is a used yacht with more than four decades behind it and, as a rule, several previous owners.

A heavy long-keeler like this is built for sea miles rather than speed, and it rewards owners who look after the structure. On a boat of this age the chainplates, the rudder fittings on the transom and the joint between keel and hull deserve a close look before purchase, and a survey with a moisture reading of the laminate is a sensible step. The cutter rig spreads the sail area over smaller sails, which helps when sailing short-handed in a blow, but it also means more standing rigging to check. Many of these yachts have been refitted for long passages, so the age of the engine, the tanks and the wiring tells as much as the year moulded into the hull.

What this means for the cover

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Gale Force 34 by Kaiser series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
