Klein; cover, cost and conditions
The name Klein stands for Scheepswerf B. Escher/Klein in Hoogezand in the north of the Netherlands. The yard is known mainly for its Vanguard sailing yachts, drawn by D. Koopmans Sr. A Vanguard 1150 from 1988 shows what to expect: hull, deck and superstructure in steel, a cutter rig with hydraulic forestay and in-mast furling, a sheltered centre cockpit above a large aft cabin and a mahogany interior. Features like these make a Vanguard a boat for couples who want to log real distances. Our sources give no founding date for the yard.
Our model records list 14 designs: ten sailing yachts, three motor yachts and one motorboat. First come the Columbus motorboat from 1965 and the Vanguard I from 1966, followed by the Vanguard II and III. From 1975 the names switch to numbers that roughly give the length in centimetres: the Vanguard 950 and 1020, from 1978 the Vanguard 1150, 1300 and 1600, from 1982 the Vanguard 1050 and 1450. The Kestrel 900, 975 and 1050 motor yachts were built from 1976 to 1983. Lengths run from 5.47 metres for the Columbus to 16.3 metres for the Vanguard 1600. The latest build year in our records is 1991, for the Vanguard 1300.
Steel forgives a lot, but it does not forgive standing water. On a used Vanguard, look at the bilges, the area under the cockpit, the chain locker and every spot where the interior lining hides the frames; a thickness survey of the plating tells more than any glossy paint. Check the age of the standing rigging and of the hydraulic forestay. Many of these yachts have spent decades on long passages and have been refitted more than once, so ask for the paperwork. A well kept steel cutter of this kind remains a calm, steady boat in a seaway.

For the Vanguard 1300, Vanguard 950, Vanguard 1050 by Klein and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Kestrel 900, Kestrel 975, Kestrel 1050 by Klein series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For the Columbus by Klein series: On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
