KM Yachtbuilders works in Makkum in the north of the Netherlands and builds aluminium yachts for long distance cruising. The yard has built sailing yachts to plans by van de Stadt, Koopmans, Frers, Berckemeyer and Hoek, and its own Bestevaer line is developed in close collaboration with Dykstra Naval Architects in Amsterdam. The boats are often recognisable from a distance: the yard likes to leave the aluminium bare and unpainted, since the metal is light, strong and easy to keep. The Bestevaer 45 ST Pure was the yard's first production boat, and after more than twenty years of building aluminium sailing yachts the Bestevaer 53 MY became its first motor yacht. She too shows bare metal outside and carries the look of the sailing yachts over to a boat without a mast.
Our model records list four designs: three sailing yachts and one motor yacht. The oldest is the Bestevaer 65 at 20.05 metres, listed from 1992 to 2007 and also the largest. The Bestevaer 45 at 14.36 metres starts in 2014 and is the smallest. The Bestevaer 53 MY at 15.97 metres appears from 2017, and the Pelagic 63 at 19.2 metres from 2018 to 2022. Two designs, the Bestevaer 45 and the Bestevaer 53 MY, reach into the most recent build years. None is shorter than 14 metres and two are longer than 19 metres. The records describe a yard that builds few boats, but large ones made for going far.
Bare aluminium changes the maintenance routine. There is no topside paint to touch up, but galvanic corrosion has to be kept in check: anodes, the isolation of stainless fittings and the shore power connection need regular attention. These are yachts for long passages, so a used example may well have sailed far, and its log tells part of the story. A buyer should look at the rig, the watermaker and the heating as closely as at the hull, and ask for the yard's build documentation. Welds around deck fittings and the keel are worth a careful look. The Bestevaer 53 MY carries the same bare metal idea over to a motor yacht, with the same need for well kept anodes and electrics.
