Knierim Yachtbau is a Kiel yard that builds one-offs and small series. Gunter Knierim founded it in 1965. His son Gunnar took over in 2000, the offshore sailor Steffen Müller joined in 2002, and at about the same time the business moved to a new site on the Kiel Canal. Earlier boats such as the first Kiel Classic 27 were still built in Laboe. The shed has produced racing yachts like the Ker 51 Varuna and the Botin designed IRC 65 Caro, as well as the first German America's Cup boat. Recent builds use advanced composites: the FC 53 has prepreg carbon skins around a Nomex honeycomb core.

Our model records list five designs, four sailing yachts and one motor yacht. The oldest is the Glacer 34 at 10.3 metres, built from 1972 to 1978. Then come the Nissen 26 R at 7.75 metres from 1984 to 1992 and the Kiel Classic 27 at 8.45 metres from 1994 to 2004, a light deep-V motorboat whose basic idea came from the photographer Peter Neumann. The two largest are the Performance Cruisers: the 49 Performance Cruiser at 15.08 metres from 2001 to 2015 and the Knierim 53 Performance Cruiser at 16.15 metres from 2005 to 2012. None of the lines reaches recent build years.

A carbon performance cruiser wants an owner who looks closely. Ask for the build documentation, check the laminate around keel bolts and chainplates, and have the mast and standing rigging inspected by a rigger. Racing sails wear quickly, so their age matters. Boats like these are built to sail offshore and to race at club level, and many have done both. The light Kiel Classic 27 is a different animal: it fits on a trailer and runs well in a chop thanks to its deep V.
