La Gazelle des Sables; cover, cost and conditions
Les Ateliers de la Gazelle des Sables work from Chaudefonds-sur-Layon in Anjou, western France. Patrick and Marie Besnier set up the workshop in 2005, turning a hobby into a trade. They build small boats in a classic style, in two families: ballasted keelboats under the Gazelle name (Gazelle des Sables, Gazelle Breizh, Gazelle des Îles) and sail-and-oar boats such as the Morgat, Lascar and Loustic. The boats are self-righting and unsinkable and are meant to be rigged and launched by one person. Hardly any of them is longer than four metres.
Our model records list nine designs: six sailing boats, one motorboat and two boats without a closer type, the Barque A Ballast and Le Loustic. The sailing boats are the three Gazelles, the Morgat 320, the L'Orchère HB 320 and the Lascar du Toul Ru; the L'Orchère HB 370 is the motorboat. The Gazelle Breizh starts in 2012, the others between 2016 and 2018, and all are recorded into the latest years. Seven lengths are known, from 2.58 metres (Lascar) to 3.9 metres (Gazelle des Îles).
These boats live on lakes, rivers and sheltered coast, often on a light trailer behind a small car. Rigging takes minutes, and a beach or slipway is all the harbour they need. Varnished wood and ropes last longer under a tarpaulin, and a dry shed over winter keeps the boat ready for the first spring sail.
