Lancer Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Lancer Yachts was an American builder based in Irvine, California. Richard Valdes founded the Lancer Yacht Corporation in 1974, having already set up Columbia Yachts in the late fifties and sold it on. The company built sailing boats in glassfibre, some twenty different designs over twelve years. The first was the Lancer 36, whose prototype Chutzpah won the Transpacific Yacht Race in 1973 and 1975. The yard became known for motorsailers carrying the PS suffix, for Power Sailer, laid out for one or two outboard engines. Bally Manufacturing bought the company in 1983, and it closed in 1986.

Our model records list one design from the yard, the Lancer 28-T MK IV, a sailing yacht of 8.5 metres built from 1976 to 1983. No Lancer reaches into recent build years; every boat of the brand is now more than forty years old. The Lancer 28 was drawn by W. Shad Turner, who also designed the smaller Lancer 25. It was meant as a daysailer and small cruiser that could go on a trailer: a shoal fixed keel, a glassfibre hull and wooden trim below. The Lancer 28T Mark V followed in 1982. A Lancer found in Europe has almost always crossed the Atlantic at some point.

A Lancer 28 of this age rewards a careful survey. Look at the keel joint and the bilge for signs of hard groundings, since a shoal keel invites exploring thin water. Deck fittings bedded more than forty years ago often weep, so check the core around stanchions and chainplates for moisture. The wooden trim below shows whether the boat has been kept dry. If the boat has been trailered, inspect the trailer as closely as the hull, and ask how the mast is raised and lowered. Many owners run an outboard on a bracket, so check the mounting and the transom behind it.

What this means for the cover

For the Lancer 28-T MK IV by Lancer Yachts series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Lancer 28-T MK IV by Lancer Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
