Cantiere Leopoldo Colombo works at Grandola ed Uniti on the upper reaches of Lake Como. Leopoldo Colombo, born in Griante in 1917, started as an apprentice at Cranchi at the age of twelve and opened his own yard in 1943. The yard builds and restores wooden boats, mostly for sailing, along with motorboats, tenders and rowing boats. Its name is tied to the 12’ Dinghy, a clinker mahogany dinghy drawn in 1913 by the Englishman George Cockshott. Colombo laminates the hull from two layers of mahogany glued with epoxy rather than screwed, over frames of oak or ash. Since the founder died in 2006 his sons Giorgio and Roberto have run the business, joined in 2008 by his grandson Giovanni.
