Worth knowing

Linge-Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

The name leads to Jan Herman Linge, a Norwegian engineer and boat designer, born in Trondheim in 1922 and died in Asker in 2007. Linge first went to sea in the merchant navy, then studied naval architecture and qualified in 1949. Until 1956 he worked as an engineer at Westermoen, where his drawings included the Tjeld class patrol boat, and later he ran his own design office, Jan H. Linge A/S. Sailors know him above all for the Soling, raced at eight Olympic Games from 1968, and the Yngling, an international class from 1979 and Olympic in 2004. His sailing boats give themselves away by name: Brisling, Firling, Fjordling, Lærling, Smiling or Willing, nearly always ending in ling.

Our model records hold one design under Linge-Yachts, the Laerling. It is listed as a sailing dinghy of 3.75 metres with build years from 1974 to 1981, and no entry reaches the most recent build years. The name is the anglicised spelling of the Norwegian Lærling, meaning apprentice, and it belongs to the family of Linge designs with the familiar ending. Our records do not say which yard built the boats. Other Linge designs such as the Soling, the Yngling or the Gambling 34 are not listed under this name, so for us the brand includes only the small dinghy.

A dinghy from the seventies has usually passed through several hands. Before buying, flex the hull gently to feel for soft spots, check the centreboard case for leaks where it meets the hull and look at the transom around the rudder fittings. Old sails may have lost their shape, and halyards and sheets often need replacing. Buoyancy tanks or bags matter on a small boat that can capsize, so make sure they still hold air or are sealed. A trailer or launching trolley with sound wheels and supports keeps the hull from deforming when she sits ashore.
