Worth knowing

Liteboat; cover, cost and conditions

Liteboat is a French yard built around one idea: a boat that sails and rows equally well. It goes back to Mathieu Bonnet, who took part in the Race to Alaska in 2016, a long distance race without engines. Out of that experience came the Lite XP, designed by Sam Manuard and built by Liteboat since 2018. The boat is easy to recognise: an unstayed two-piece carbon mast, a boomless mainsail, a gennaker for downwind work and a sliding rowing seat with carbon sculls for windless days. The hull is vacuum infused foam sandwich with carbon reinforcement, and a small cuddy sleeps two, with a cockpit tent adding room. In 2019 the Lite XP was named European Yacht of the Year in the Special Yacht category.

Our model records hold a single design for the brand: the XP 20, listed as a sailing dinghy, six metres long and built from 2020 to 2024. It matches the Lite XP, which the published specifications put at 5.99 metres. No second line or larger boat appears under the Liteboat name, and no series in our records runs into the most recent build years. That makes every XP 20 a young boat, and any used example on offer comes from the same short build window and has the same length. The differences lie in equipment and in how each boat has been looked after.

Looking after an XP 20 largely means looking after its carbon. The mast, the sculls and the rowing rig deserve a careful check for chafe and impact marks, especially where the oars rest in their gates. A light dinghy lives on its road trailer, so wheel bearings, rollers and tie-down points matter as much as the hull. Expedition sailors often beach the boat on shingle or sand, which wears the bottom of the hull and the foot of the daggerboard. When buying second hand, ask how the boat spent its winters, whether the sails and gennaker are original, and look at the sliding seat track for corrosion or play.

What this means for the cover

For the XP 20 by Liteboat series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the XP 20 by Liteboat series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
