Worth knowing
Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Inc.; cover, cost and conditions
Lyman-Morse is based in Thomaston, Maine, on the St. George River. Its roots go back to 1912, when Charles A. Morse founded Morse Boatbuilding there; through the twentieth century the yard built Alden Malabar schooners, Friendship sloops and custom yachts. By the late seventies the business was close to shutting when boatbuilder Cabot Lyman asked to rent shop space. Instead the two formed a partnership, and Lyman-Morse came into being in 1978. The new yard made its name with traditional Maine lobster yachts and the Seguin line of sailing yachts, both around twelve metres. Today it is a family-owned yard turning out custom work from carbon catamarans to motor yachts.
Our model records list four designs, two sailing yachts and two motorboats, all starting in 2018 and running into the most recent build years. Among the sailing yachts, the e33 LM at 10.23 metres is the smallest design on the list and the LM 46 at 13.91 metres the largest. The motorboats are the Hood 35 LM at 10.39 metres and the Monhegan 42 Extended Cruiser at 12.8 metres, named after Monhegan Island off the Maine coast. The letters LM in the model names stand for Lyman-Morse. The range therefore runs from just over ten to just under fourteen metres, with nothing below ten metres.
Boats from a custom yard tend to differ from one to the next, so a used Lyman-Morse comes with its own build file rather than a standard specification, and that file is worth asking for. On the sailing yachts, check the age of the standing rigging, the keel attachment and the state of the deck hardware. On the Hood 35 LM and the Monhegan 42, look at engine hours, the shaft and the cooling system, and ask how the boat has spent its winters. New England boats often pass the cold months ashore in heated sheds, which is kind to varnish and gelcoat. A boat that has crossed the Atlantic since should show the same care in its logbook.
