M-Boats (M-Boats Garlington 49) is an Argentine yard based in Escobar, in the province of Buenos Aires. Its model names include the MD, Soto, MB, Garlington, SL and Rocter lines, so sailing yachts and motor yachts come off the same premises. The yard is best known as builder of the Soto 40, a racing yacht drawn by Javier Soto Acebal in 2008. The Soto 40 is 12.30 metres long with a beam of 3.75 metres and a draught of 2.60 metres, and the class raced in the Audi MedCup. The names tell you most of what you need: Soto marks the designs of Soto Acebal, while One Design on the MD 35 means a class in which every boat is built the same, so the crew makes the difference.

Before buying a used Soto or MD 35, look at the keel attachment and the hull around it for signs of a grounding, check the rudder bearings and ask how many seasons the sails and the running rigging have done. Boats that raced on a circuit often carry a big wardrobe of sails and electronics, which is worth listing item by item. The motor yachts call for the usual checks: engine hours, service records and the state of the shafts or drives. Since many of these boats were built in Argentina and sold abroad, papers showing the build year and earlier owners make a purchase easier.
