Behind this name stands the Dutch designer Frans Maas, who began drawing in the 1950s and in 1970 founded his own yard at Breskens on the Western Scheldt. There he built fast cruising and racing yachts, which ran under the name Standfast; the yard built for customers all over the world. After the business ended in 1993 building continued under the Standfast name until that too closed in 2008. You recognise the yachts by the long shallow waterline, the narrow hull and the low, very straight deckhouse.
Our model records list 39 models from this yard, all of them sailing yachts. Recorded build years run from 1963 to 2002. Thirty nine series are recorded: the Standfast 24, 33, 36 and 36 S, 40 with 40 P and 40 S, and 47 with 47 C and 47 S, alongside single designs named Loper, Pion, Calypso, Tango, Breeon, Bikini, Coriolan, Eole and Gerfaut and the Motorsailor 15. Lengths run from 8.2 to 16.5 metres, half the models between 11.1 and 14.3 metres. The number gives the approximate length in feet, so a Standfast 40 measures around 12.2 metres.
These are fast yachts, often raced, and that is a harder working life than cruising: rig and sails meet loads on a beat that a cruising boat never sees. They are also old enough now that condition has overtaken the year of build as the thing that matters, and on a well kept example the real value usually sits well above any depreciation table.
