Marine Construction; cover, cost and conditions
Marine Construction, known as Marcon, was a yard at Woolston near Southampton. Its founder Eric White was one of the early builders to work in glassfibre. After fire destroyed an earlier factory, he took over a run down yard at Woolston and carried on there. White sold a majority stake in 1970, left in 1976, and Marcon ceased trading in 1979. The names associated with the yard include the Trident, Striker, Tomahawk and Sabre, and the Sabre 27 came from the drawing board of Alan F. Hill. These are glassfibre yachts of the sixties and seventies, many of them still sailed along the south coast of England.
Our model records list six designs: five sailing yachts and one smaller sailing boat, the Marcon 22 at 6.62 metres, recorded from 1968 to 1983. The oldest entries are the Rival 31 and the Sabre 27, both from 1966. The Rival 31 at 9.45 metres ends in 1973, while the Sabre 27 at 8.23 metres runs to 1985. The Javelin 30 at 9.29 metres appears from 1967 to 1980, and the Marcon 34, at 10.41 metres the largest design, from 1975 to 1984. The Tomahawk at 7.7 metres runs longest, from 1967 to 1998. No line reaches into the recent build years, and several entries go past 1979, the year the source gives for the yard's closure.
Boats of this age are usually on their second or third set of rigging and engine, so the first questions for a buyer are when the standing rigging was last replaced and what is under the cockpit floor. Early glassfibre hulls were often laid up thick, but decks with balsa or plywood cores can turn soft around stanchions and chainplates. Keel bolts and the hull to keel joint deserve a proper survey. Many of these yachts still cruise the south coast of England, and a well kept example remains a straightforward coastal cruiser.

For the Tomahawk, Sabre 27, Marcon 34 by Marine Construction and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Marcon 22 by Marine Construction series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
