Markus Glas GmbH; cover, cost and conditions

Markus Glas, a joiner and master boatbuilder, opened his yard in 1924 at Possenhofen on the western shore of Lake Starnberg in Bavaria. Early work meant small tenders, fishing boats and sailing cruisers, followed by racing and touring motorboats. When the era of motorboat racing on inland lakes faded, the yard turned to sail. A fourth generation now runs the business, today with an address in Pöcking. The yard builds Dragons and 45 square metre National Cruisers, its own designs such as the L 95 and the Lake 35 touring yacht, and the electric 7EVEN. Mahogany and traditional joinery sit alongside glassfibre hulls, and repair and restoration of wooden and GRP boats are part of daily work.

Our model records list eleven designs: five sailing yachts, four Dragon keelboats, one sailing catamaran and one motorboat. The earliest entry is the Drachen built from 1982 to 1990, followed by the Fun Cat, a 4.5 metre catamaran from 1985 to 1992. The Drachen 3G appears from 2007 in three versions, glassfibre, glassfibre with teak deck, and mahogany with teak deck, all 8.9 metres long. The L 95 starts in 1992 and the L 95 CR in 2007, both at 9.05 metres. The Lake 31 measures 9.5 metres, while the Lake 35 and the 45er National Cruiser share the top length of 10.5 metres. The 7EVEN motorboat, 7.4 metres long, is listed for 2016 to 2024. Five lines run into the most recent build years: the glassfibre Drachen 3G, the L 95, the L 95 CR, the Lake 35 and the National Cruiser.

Looking after a mahogany Dragon is a different job from caring for a glassfibre one. Varnish, seams and the teak deck want regular attention, and a wooden hull should be dried and checked before it goes back into the lake. On a used boat it pays to look at the keel bolts, the mast step and the state of the fittings, since Dragons and National Cruisers are racing classes and many have spent years on club courses. Boats that travel from lake to lake for regattas sit on a road trailer, and that trailer deserves the same inspection as the hull. The L 95 and the Lake models are laid out for relaxed day sailing and short trips on inland waters.

What this means for the cover

As the Bootswerft Markus 45er Nat.

Kreuzer, Bootswerft Markus Drachen 3G GFK,

Bootswerft Markus L 95 by Markus Glas GmbH and 2 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Bootswerft Markus 7EVEN, Bootswerft Markus Drachen 3G GFK/Teakdeck,

Bootswerft Markus Drachen 3G Mahagoni/Teakdeck by Markus Glas GmbH and 1 more series the market

value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Fun Cat and Drachen by Markus Glas GmbH series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Bootswerft Markus 45er Nat.

Kreuzer, Bootswerft Markus L 95, Bootswerft Markus L 95 CR by Markus Glas GmbH and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the Bootswerft Markus Drachen 3G GFK, Bootswerft Markus Drachen 3G GFK/Teakdeck,

Bootswerft Markus Drachen 3G Mahagoni/Teakdeck by Markus Glas GmbH and further series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

For the Bootswerft Markus 7EVEN by Markus Glas GmbH series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.

For the Fun Cat by Markus Glas GmbH series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
