Marten Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Marten Yachts is a New Zealand builder whose reputation grew from racing yachts in composite materials from the mid-1980s on. Boats such as Kingfisher and Mari Cha III came out of its sheds, as did New Zealand challengers for the America's Cup. The yard worked with autoclaved, pre-impregnated high-modulus carbon and later used a resin infusion method for its production boats. Around 2000 it turned to fast cruising yachts: a family of cruiser-racers from the Reichel/Pugh design office, beginning with the Marten 49. In 2005 the company became part of the Australian firm Azzura Marine, which builds on the Gold Coast in Queensland and in Nowra, New South Wales. The racing background shows in the cruising boats too, which draw on the same composite know-how.
Our model records list five Marten designs, all sailing yachts and all built between 2001 and 2012. First comes the Marten 49 at 15 metres, listed from 2001. The Marten 67 at 20.4 metres follows from 2002, and from 2003 the 67 Regatta variant of the same length, the Marten 72 at 22 metres and the Marten 85 at 25.8 metres, the largest boat of the family. All five entries end with build year 2012, so none reaches into the most recent years. Four of the five exceed 20 metres and none is shorter than 15, which places the brand firmly in a size where a well drilled crew is part of the deal.
Carbon hulls of this calibre need an owner who looks beneath the paint. A survey with ultrasound or thermal imaging can show delamination or core problems that a visual check misses, and any history of groundings or collisions deserves a full repair record. Rigs and sails on boats of 20 metres and more are expensive wear items, so their age matters as much as the hull's. Winches and deck gear take heavy loads and should be serviced on a schedule. A yacht built to race may have had a hard life, so logbooks and maintenance files are worth reading closely before any purchase.
