Mikulas Maritime; cover, cost and conditions

Mikulas Maritime is a boatbuilder from the Czech Republic, known for the Cafe family of compact glassfibre sailing yachts. The Cafe 24 was built from 1998 in a joint effort with the Polish yard Gemini, to drawings by the German design office Judel/Vrolijk. It carries a fractional sloop rig and is laid out as a small weekend cruiser for inland lakes and coastal waters, easy to sail single-handed or with a small crew. The range thus pairs a German design with production in Central Europe. The family is easy to place: every model carries the Cafe name and a number that roughly matches its length in feet, from the 24 up to the 30.

Our model records contain five Cafe designs: the Cafe 24, filed as a sailing boat, and four sailing yachts. The Cafe 24 at 7.3 metres comes first, from 1997 until 2009. The Cafe 30 at 9.18 metres, the largest of the group, joins in 2000, followed by the Cafe 27 at 8.3 metres in 2001, the Cafe 28 at 8.6 metres in 2004 and the Cafe 25 at 7.6 metres in 2005. The Cafe 25 and Cafe 28 run longest, until 2012, while the Cafe 27 and Cafe 30 end in 2010. No line reaches the most recent build years. All five sit between just over seven and just over nine metres, a size a small crew can still handle comfortably.

A fractional rig on a small cruiser is simple, but on a boat from the late nineties or the 2000s the standing rigging may be due for renewal, so ask when it was last replaced. Check the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull for cracks, especially if the boat has been sailed on shallow lakes. Deck fittings on glassfibre boats of this age can let water into the deck core, which shows up as soft patches underfoot. Sails are often the original set, and a new wardrobe changes how the boat sails. Because the last entries in our records date from 2012, spare parts may have to be traced through other owners.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Cafe 25, Cafe 28, Cafe 27 by Mikulas Maritime and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the Cafe 24 by Mikulas Maritime series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
