Moore & Sons; cover, cost and conditions
Moore & Sons is a boatbuilder from Wroxham on the Norfolk Broads, the network of rivers and lakes in the east of England. A small series of Reedling class boats from 1951 shows the yard's roots in wood: little Broads yachts, carvel built in mahogany on oak, with the mast stepped in a tabernacle so it can be lowered for the low bridges. The Seahawk 17 brought glassfibre into the picture. Designed by John A. Bennett and introduced in 1969 as a compact micro cruiser, it was first built by Reedcraft, and in 1977 Moore's of Wroxham took over production. The yard's story therefore spans classic timber craft and early plastic boats.
Our model records list five designs, all filed as sailing boats, built between 1971 and 1990. Four belong to the Sea Hawk family: the Sea Hawk at 5.13 metres from 1971 to 1980, the Sea Hawk 5,13 from 1975 to 1983, and two entries for the Sea Hawk 5,30 at 5.3 metres, both from 1972, one running to 1980 and the other to 1981. At 5.13 metres the hull comes very close to the 17 feet of the Seahawk 17. The fifth design is the M610 at 6.1 metres, listed from 1982 to 1990, which makes it the largest and the most recent boat in the list. No line reaches the recent build years, so every one of these boats is more than three decades old.
Small glassfibre cruisers from the seventies can be good value if the basics are sound. Check the hull for osmosis blisters and the deck for soft areas around stanchions and cleats, where water creeps into the core. On a boat with a lowering mast, the tabernacle and its pivot bolt carry real loads every time the mast comes down, so look for wear and corrosion there. Original sails and running rigging are often tired by now. If the boat lives on a trailer, the trailer's bearings, brakes and tyres deserve as much attention as the boat. Paperwork from previous owners helps to tell a cared for boat from a neglected one.
