Nao-Glass; cover, cost and conditions
Nao-Glass was the Spanish yard behind the Puma sailing boats. It was based in Lliçà de Vall in the province of Barcelona and ran as a division of INERGA, a plastics maker serving several industries. The name says as much: nao is an old Spanish word for ship, and glass refers to the glass fibre the hulls are moulded from. In 1978 Drassanes Esportives S.A., known as Dresport, took over as successor. Every boat carries the Puma name with a figure close to its length in feet.
Our records list ten Puma models: two sailing boats, the Puma 23 and 24, and eight sailing yachts, the Puma 26, 27, 29, 32, 34, 37, 38 S and 47. They range from the 7 metre Puma 23 to the 14.4 metre Puma 47. The Puma 26 is the oldest entry with build year 1967, followed by the 23 in 1968 and the 34 in 1971. Eight lines end in 1985, while the Puma 37, from 1977, and the Puma 47, from 1989, run until 1995.
Every Puma is now at least thirty years old, so chainplates, keel bolts, standing rigging and the deck core deserve a survey before a new season or a purchase. The 23 and 24 are small enough to tow behind a car to a lake or a slipway; the larger yachts sit on a marina berth or a mooring and come ashore on a cradle for the winter.
