Nestaway Boats Ltd; cover, cost and conditions

Nestaway Boats comes from Christchurch in England and was founded by Ian Thomson. The firm made its name with nesting dinghies: boats built in two halves that stow one inside the other and go back together in seconds. To assemble one, the bow section is lifted out of the stern, turned round, hooked on for alignment and held with ring bolts, all without tools. The first boat was an 8 ft 8 in pram in cold moulded mahogany sheathed in glass and epoxy, soon also offered in GRP. The nesting boats Nestaway developed are now built by the Drascombe team under the Adventure name, while Nestaway itself has moved into selling electric outboards.

Our model records list one boat from this maker: the 9ft Nesting Stem Dinghy, filed as a sailing boat, with build years 2009 to 2015 and a length of 2.74 metres. No line reaches into the most recent build years, so these dinghies are only found second hand today. According to the Broads class register the boat is 1.30 metres wide and weighs just under 50 kilograms, built in GRP with a clinker look and a plumb stem. She can be rowed or rigged with a lug sail, which makes her both a tender for a cruising yacht and a small sailing boat for the anchorage. Taken apart she fits on a foredeck or in a car boot.

With a two piece boat, the joint is everything. On a used example, look closely at the mating faces of the bulkheads where the halves meet, at the ring bolts and their backing, and at any seal that keeps water out of the join. Clinker style moulding has many edges, and cracks in the gelcoat along those lines are worth spotting early. Check that the rig parts, rudder, daggerboard and oars are all present, since a sailing kit missing one piece is hard to complete. A dinghy carried on deck should be lashed down firmly and protected from chafe, and one left in the water needs a stout painter.
