Nordcantieri; cover, cost and conditions

Nordcantieri is an Italian sailing yacht yard whose boats date from the seventies and early eighties. The models carry animal names: Panda for the smaller boats and Koala for the larger yachts, plus the Mania. The Koalas were meant for long passages. The 1973 Koala 50 is the yard's best known boat, because a Koala 50 sailed in the first Whitbread Round the World Race, the event that later became The Ocean Race. These are solid Italian cruisers built for real sailing.

Our model records list six Nordcantieri designs, all classed as sailing yachts. The Panda and the Koala 38 are the earliest, from 1967. The Mania follows from 1970, the Panda 31 from 1971 and the Koala 50 and Panda 34 from 1973. The Panda 34 runs longest, to 1988, while the others end between 1977 and 1982. Lengths run from the 8.75 metre Panda to the 15 metre Koala 50; the three Pandas span 8.75 to 10 metres, the Mania is 10.6 and the Koala 38 11.7 metres.

At forty to nearly sixty years old, these yachts are judged by their refits as much as their pedigree. Chainplates, standing rigging, the keel bolts and the engine are the usual places to look first. Most live on a marina berth in the Mediterranean or the Adriatic and come ashore for winter. A Koala 50 still has the hull for serious passages, if the boat has been kept up.
