Worth knowing
Omega Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Omega yachts come from Bjästa in the north of Sweden, where they were built by the Börjesson brothers under the company name Svenska Familjebåtar AB. The business had started out making rubber gloves and turned to boatbuilding in 1960. Ron Holland drew both the Omega 36 and the Omega 30 S. Construction followed Swedish practice: a sprayed laminate hull reinforced with glassfibre, Divinycell foam above, a balsa sandwich deck and bulkheads bolted to flanges. After the founding family retired in 1988 the yard closed in 1991, and the last hulls were delivered through another firm until around 1993. Most of the boats still sail in Sweden, with many others in England, Germany, Holland and Denmark.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts. The Omega 28 is the smallest at 8.53 metres and, with build years from 1974 to 1990, the oldest line. The Omega 30 measures 9.4 metres and runs from 1979 to 1990. The Omega 36 reaches 11 metres and is listed from 1982 to 1996, the late years matching the hulls completed after the yard had closed. None of the lines continues into the most recent build years. Every Omega on the market today is therefore a used boat with at least three decades behind it, often with owners in more than one country along the way.
The main points to check on a used Omega are well known. The keel suspension deserves a careful inspection, and depending on the version so does the stern tube, since the stern tubes on these boats have a tendency to leak. The deep bilge that comes from the stub keel is worth keeping dry and clean. Balsa-cored decks should be sounded around fittings for any sign of moisture. Rig, standing rigging and sails will often have been renewed by now, and the paperwork for that work tells a buyer a lot. Ron Holland's lines give these boats a lively turn of speed, so many have been sailed hard.
