Opus/Pedersen & Thuesen; cover, cost and conditions

Pedersen & Thuesen is the name of a Danish yard in Kolding. Under the Opus name it built cruising yachts of just over ten metres in the seventies and eighties. Odd Rembert Anderson drew the Opus 34, and the source gives 1970 as her first year. The Helmsman 35, also advertised as the Helmsman Opus 35, came from the board of Håkan Södergren and was likewise built in Kolding. The yard also turned out Dragons, among them a boat from 1969. The Opus 34 shows the slim shape of her era: 10.4 metres long but only 3.15 metres wide, drawing 1.65 metres and displacing around five tonnes.

Our model records list four designs, all sailing yachts. The Opus 34 at 10.42 metres is the oldest line and runs from 1969 to 1987. From 1980 the Opus 34 MK-II of the same length joined, also ending in 1987. The Opus 35 at 10.48 metres is the longest and appears from 1974 to 1984, while the Lord Helmsman at 9.55 metres is the shortest, entered from 1975 to 1982. None of the lines reaches the most recent build years, and the whole range fits within less than a metre of length.

An Opus today is a classic with close to forty years or more behind her. Before buying, look at the deck core around fittings and chainplates, since moisture creeps in over decades. The keel bolts and the hull to keel joint deserve inspection out of the water. Many boats have had a newer engine fitted, and the date of the repower matters more than the original specification. Narrow hulls like these go well to windward and feel steady in a seaway, and owners have taken them on long ocean passages; a well kept Opus with fresh rigging is still a sound boat for serious cruising.
