Asante is the name under which the Künemund aluminium yacht yard built its sailing yachts. The German firm specialised in aluminium construction, and the boats show it: they pair the toughness of a metal hull with the sailing manners of a sporty cruising yacht. Aluminium masts are part of the package, and some designs were built with a hydraulic lifting keel that cuts the draught sharply for shallow water. One Asante Sloop 50 from 1997 offered on the brokerage market has two Atlantic crossings behind her, which says a good deal about what these boats were made for.

Our model records list nine designs: eight sailing yachts and one sailing catamaran, the Asante 170 Kat at 17.5 metres. Build years run from 1982 to 2007, and no line reaches into the most recent years. The longest run belongs to the Asante 12,80, built from 1982 to 2003. The heart of the range dates from 1986 to 1996: the Asante 33, 40, 47 and 53 and the Super Asante, at 19.9 metres the largest boat. The Asante 119 c at 11.9 metres followed, and the youngest line, the Asante 980, was built from 2001 to 2007 and is the smallest at 9.8 metres. Four designs stay below twelve metres, four measure 14 metres or more.

Aluminium needs a different eye from glassfibre. On a used Asante, look closely wherever stainless fittings, bronze seacocks or a carbon boom meet the hull and deck, because mixed metals in salt water invite galvanic corrosion. Check the anodes, the paint system and any spots where water can sit under fittings. Where a lifting keel is fitted, the hydraulics, the seals and the keel box deserve a careful survey, ideally with the boat out of the water. Many of these yachts were built for long passages, so tankage, the rig and the condition of the standing rigging tell much about how hard a boat has been used. A surveyor who knows metal hulls is well worth the fee.
