Worth knowing
Päijän; cover, cost and conditions
Päijän is a Finnish boat brand with roughly a century of tradition behind it, known above all for classic rowing boats. The old factory at Askikala burnt down completely in 2019. Päijän Boats Oy was set up in October 2021 to carry on the work, and the boats are now built in a new factory in Lahti. The starting point is the historic moulds, used in keeping with the old way of building, alongside newly developed ones. Founder Antti Mäkelä describes the boats as durable, safe, reliable and steady on course. Today's models are meant as a platform for different kinds of equipment, including an electric motor.
Our model records list three designs, all entered as motorboats: the Päijän 471 at 4.71 metres, the Päijän 575 at 5.75 metres and the Sulka 440 S at 4.4 metres. Build years run from 1994 to 2005. The 575 and the Sulka 440 S both start in 1994, the 471 a year later. The Sulka 440 S ends in 2001, while both Päijän lines continue until 2005. None of the three reaches into the most recent build years, so anyone buying one today is buying second hand. The name 471 does live on in the current range of the new company, there as a rowing boat.
Small Finnish open boats of this kind tend to spend summers on a lake, tied up at a cottage jetty or launched from a trailer. When looking at one that is twenty or thirty years old, start with the transom: the area around the outboard bracket takes the load of the engine and shows cracks or soft spots first. Check the keel line for scrapes from beaching on rocky shores, and look at the oarlocks, seats and fittings for corrosion and loose fastenings. A boat that has wintered upside down in a shed is usually in better shape than one left full of rainwater and snow. The trailer deserves the same attention as the hull, from tyres to winch strap.
