Worth knowing
Pearson Composites, LLC; cover, cost and conditions
Pearson Composites, LLC is based in Warren, Rhode Island, and grew out of the marine division of TPI Composites, the former Tillotson-Pearson. The name itself is older: cousins Clinton and Everett Pearson founded Pearson Yachts in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1956, started with glassfibre dinghies and made their name in 1959 with the Triton 28 drawn by Carl Alberg. After the 1991 bankruptcy TPI bought the rights to the brand. The Warren plant built Pearson boats, J/Boats and above all the Alerion Express. Carl Schumacher drew the original Alerion Express 28 in 1990: long overhangs, low freeboard, tiller steering and a fractional sloop rig, with an optional self-tacking Hoyt jib boom. Holby Marine built the first hulls; the Alerion name later moved to US Watercraft and, in 2018, to Alerion Yachts.
Our model records list 14 designs, every one of them an Alerion: ten sailing yachts and four smaller sailing boats. The story starts with the Alerion 28 Express in 1991, joined from 1994 by the little Alerion 20 Express at 6.1 metres. The Express family then climbs through the 38 Express from 2003 and the 33 Express from 2005 to the 41 Express at 12.37 metres, with Sport versions of the 30 and 33 and an Alerion 41 Cruising alongside. The AE 45 tops the range at 13.8 metres and appears from 2006 to 2015. A new generation arrives in 2017 with the Alerion 20, 30 and 33 and the Alerion 28 One Design. Three of them, the 20, 30 and 33, run into the most recent build years, and seven designs measure ten metres or more.
Many Alerions are sailed as daysailers from a home mooring, with short and frequent outings rather than long passages. The fibreglass hulls age well when looked after, but on a boat from the nineties it pays to check the keel bolts, the rudder bearings and the bedding of the deck fittings for weeping. The Hoyt jib boom has its own pivot fitting that wants grease and an occasional look, and a tired mainsail shows quickly on a fractional rig. Many early 28 Express hulls have been refitted with new sails, cushions and electronics, so a careful survey and a full inventory list help when comparing two boats of the same year.
