Penn Yan Boats took its name from its home town of Penn Yan in New York State, in the Finger Lakes. Charles A. Herrman, born in Germany, founded the company in 1921. Wooden boats and canoes came first. The factory burned down in 1923, and by the following year building had resumed in a new plant. In 1936 the yard launched the Car Top, a narrow, light outboard boat that two people could lift onto a car roof. In the early sixties production moved entirely to glassfibre. The best known feature was the patented Tunnel Drive, a recess moulded into the bottom that partly encloses propeller and shaft. New owners took over in 1979 and the company closed in 2002.

On a tunnel hull it pays to look closely at the recess, the shaft and the stern gear, because the tunnel protects the propeller in shallow water but makes the parts harder to reach. Original hardware and badges are increasingly hard to find, so keep them. Many of these boats spend summers on a lake and winters in a shed on their trailer.
