Polymar; cover, cost and conditions

Polymar is a small yard in Sada, on the Galician coast in the north-west of Spain. Jesús Alvarez started it in 1991, and its early work was mainly small polyester boats. In 1995 the yard took on a bigger project, a sailing boat of seven metres. Its starting point was the concept and hull shape of the 6.5 metre boats raced single-handed across the Atlantic in the Mini Transat. The prototype was finished early in 1996, and the first production Yatlant 24 followed by the middle of that year. The aim was a quick yet stable boat for coastal waters that could cope with rough weather. Sailing schools and clubs took to it, and class racing grew up around the design. In 2004 Alvarez worked with naval architect Javier Cela on two larger designs, the Yatlant 26 at 7.5 metres and the Yatlant 28 at 8.5 metres.

Our model records hold a single Polymar design: the Yatlant 24, a seven-metre sailing yacht listed for build years 1996 to 2002. The first year matches the start of series production as the builder describes it. Nothing in the list reaches the most recent build years, and the larger Yatlant 26 and 28 do not appear in our records. Anyone looking for a Yatlant 24 today is therefore looking at the second-hand market, where the youngest boats from the recorded period are well over twenty years old and the oldest close to thirty.

A boat born from a Mini Transat concept is light and lively, so the rig deserves attention first. Check chainplates, shrouds and the mast step for movement or cracking, and ask how old the standing rigging is. Boats that spent years with a sailing school or on a club racing circuit often show wear around winches, tracks and the companionway, while the sails themselves may already have been replaced. On a polyester hull of this age, look for osmosis blisters below the waterline and soft spots in the deck around fittings. The Atlantic swell of Galicia is a demanding home ground, and a boat that has sailed there for decades has usually been used rather than left in a marina.

What this means for the cover

For the Yatlant 24 by Polymar series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Yatlant 24 by Polymar series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
