Radab AB; cover, cost and conditions
Radab is the work of two Swedish engineers, Lars Bergström and Sven-Olof Ridder. They set the company up in 1964 while still students at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and the name is an acronym of research and development plus the Swedish AB for a limited company. Two of their ideas are still familiar to sailors today: the Windex, a wind indicator for the masthead, and the B&R rig. They developed that rig after wind tunnel tests at the institute, filed the patent in 1973 and saw it granted in 1975. Its hallmarks are spreaders swept aft by about 25 to 30 degrees and shrouds running diagonally down from the spreader tips, which allow the mast to be prebent and make a backstay optional. The Windex 92 carried the first generation of this rig.
Our model records list exactly one Radab design, the Windex 92 sailing yacht, with build years from 1981 to 1996 and a length of 9.2 metres, so the figure in the name is the length in decimetres. Bergström and Ridder drew the boat themselves. It was built in glassfibre with a seven eighths fractional rig and displaces around 3,000 kilograms, which puts it among the sporty cruisers of its day: light enough to sail fast, roomy enough for a weekend aboard. None of the entries reaches into the most recent build years, and even the last boats of the line are now about three decades old. Anyone looking for one is buying used, often in Sweden or elsewhere around the Baltic.
The rig is where a Windex 92 needs the closest attention. Swept spreaders and diagonal shrouds carry loads differently from a conventional masthead rig, so terminals, spreader roots and chainplates deserve a careful check, and standing rigging of unknown age is worth replacing. A light glassfibre boat of this period can show soft spots in the deck around fittings, so tap the deck and look at the core where hardware has been rebedded. Owners tend to sail these boats actively, on club racing evenings as well as coastal cruises. On a used example, ask for the age of the sails, look for signs of earlier groundings at the keel joint and check that the mast still takes its prebend evenly.

Series by Radab AB, build years and cover
Windex 92 is a sailing yacht from Radab AB, built from 1981 to 1996.
For the Windex 92 by Radab AB series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Windex 92 by Radab AB series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
