Simmerskip Jachtbouw is based in Sneek in Friesland, in the heart of the northern Dutch lake district. The yard builds steel motor cruisers drawn by F. Cuperus, with hard-chine hulls and a box keel, sturdy lines with an elegant touch and a layout aimed at inland and coastal cruising. Charter firms run them in Friesland, on the Randmeren and in Overijssel, and a draught of around one metre suits the shallow lakes. Used Simmerskips from the 2000s also turn up on the brokerage market, such as a 1200 AK built in 2004 and a 1050 OK from 2006, both in steel with diesel power.

Steel ages differently from glassfibre. On a used Simmerskip the first questions concern the hull: thickness readings, the state of the coating below the waterline, the anodes and any rust where water can stand, around deck fittings, window frames and inside the box keel. A survey ashore is the honest way to see it. Inside, condensation behind linings is the usual weak spot on steel boats, so look behind panels and in lockers. Boats that spent years in charter on the Frisian lakes show their history in engine hours and in scuffs from locks and bridges, which is wear rather than damage.
