Worth knowing
Stäheli; cover, cost and conditions
The Stäheli yard stood in Altnau on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and no longer exists. In the 1960s it was known for what became simply Stäheli boats: classic hard chine designs with long keels, built in plywood to drawings by the naval architect Alan Buchanan. A successor in Kreuzlingen made mostly dinghy kits until around 2000. Most models carry the name Hucky followed by a number that roughly equals the length in feet, so a Hucky 15 is 4.7 metres and a Hucky 46 almost 14.
Our model records list 32 Stäheli models: twelve powerboats, ten sailing boats and ten sailing yachts. Build years run from 1965 to 2003, and none is in current production. Lengths range from 2.3 to 14 metres, with half of them between 4 and 8.8 metres. The small Hucky boats of the 1990s, from the Hucky 7 to the Hucky 11, measure 2.3 to 3.4 metres. The sailing boats include the Huckleberry 17, 21 and 22 and the Esta 700 of 1965, while the yachts run from the 7.6 metre Hucky 25 through the Hucky 33 and 37 to the Hucky 46 and the Bodana 46 at 14 metres.
Many of these are lake boats, sailed in summer and laid up ashore for the winter. With build years going back to 1965, the value of a Stäheli rests on how well the wood has been kept: sound plywood without rot at the chines and keel joint, dry bilges and a usable rig. On the larger yachts the engine, sails and joinery count as well.

For the Hucky 7, Hucky 7 S, Hucky 8 S by Stäheli and 9 more series the market value and the
replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Hucky 12, Hucky 15, Hucky 28 by Stäheli and 17 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Hucky 7, Hucky 10 P, Hucky 10 S by Stäheli and further series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Hucky 7 S, Hucky 8 S, Hucky 11 S by Stäheli and further series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the Hucky 28, Hucky 33, Hucky 37 by Stäheli and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
