The Stocznia Ustka lies at Ustka on the Polish Baltic coast, west of Gdansk. The present works date from 2002 and carry on the production of the earlier yard on the same site: life saving appliances, workboats, accommodation ladders and gangways. Work is mostly in glass reinforced plastic, and the boats are accepted by classification societies as equipment aboard commercial ships must be. You recognise them by the plain functional shape with enclosed helm cabins, heavy rubbing strakes and open deck space instead of upholstery.

A free fall lifeboat is an unusual thing to find in a boat catalogue. It is launched by dropping from a ramp on the stern of a ship, which means its hull has to survive an impact no pleasure boat will ever see and its crew has to be strapped in before it goes. Everything about such a craft, from the seat frames to the glazing, follows from that one moment.
