Van Dam Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Van Dam Custom Boats is a family business in Northern Michigan that has been building wooden boats since 1977. Its most talked-about launch is the Victoria Z, drawn by Michael Peters Yacht Design of Florida. The brief was to combine raw power with timeless lines and to wrap the result in Honduras mahogany. Hull and deck are a wood composite with a mahogany outer skin; the timber comes from a single log and is book matched, so the grain mirrors itself from port to starboard. Twin Arneson surface drives sit at the stern, and the large stainless rudders are cut in-house on the yard's own CNC machine. A Van Dam is known by its varnished mahogany, and on the Victoria Z by teak decks, hand-tooled leather seats and custom stainless hardware.
Our model records list two motorboats. The Van Dam 24' measures 7.32 metres and the Victoria Z 10.65 metres. Both start in 2018 and reach into the most recent build years, so both remain in production. The Victoria Z carries two modernised Ford 427 engines producing around 1,100 hp between them, good for a top speed of 85 knots through its surface drives. Just over three metres separate the two boats; the 24' keeps to day-boat proportions, while the Victoria Z is a sports boat with the spirit of a racer. Our list holds no older designs for the brand, even though the yard has been working in wood for decades.
Bright-finished mahogany asks for a steady cycle of sanding and fresh varnish, and these boats are happiest stored indoors, away from sun and frost. On a used boat, look closely at the varnish for cracks or grey patches where water may have reached the wood, and check the bedding around every fitting. A wood-composite hull with a mahogany skin behaves differently from traditional planking, so repairs belong with a yard that knows the method. High-output petrol V8 engines and surface drives call for a documented service history, so ask for records of engine rebuilds, drive servicing and rudder checks. Leather upholstery likes shade and regular conditioning, and polished stainless needs fresh water after every outing.
