Worth knowing
VanVossen Tenders; cover, cost and conditions
VanVossen builds tenders, sport tenders and sloops in aluminium, made entirely in the Netherlands. A sloep is the open, beamy motorboat the Dutch take along canals, town waterways and lakes, usually with family or friends on board. VanVossen builds them in aluminium on a stable V-bottom that keeps the boat steady and tracking straight. The 550 is described as a sturdy aluminium boat with the classic lines of a lifeboat, seating eight, with a teak deck, high padded backrests and a bimini. On the tenders the helm sits on the centreline towards the stern. The range runs through several lengths up to a tender of 8.5 metres, and with the Plugin-E-Tender it also includes boats with electric drive.
Our model records list two motorboats. The VanVossen Tender 600 Sport measures 6.05 metres, starts with build year 2013 and reaches into the most recent build years. The VanVossen Sloep 550 comes in at 5.5 metres and appears with build years from 2018 to 2022. Barely more than half a metre separates them, and both belong to the class of open family day boats. The tender is the longer-running entry, in production for more than a decade, while the sloop had a short run. Other types such as the 650 Sporttender, the 595 and the 850 are known from the market but are not part of our model records.
Aluminium is a low-maintenance choice, but it has its own rules. Galvanic corrosion is the thing to watch: check the anodes every season, keep stray current from shore power in mind and never use copper-based antifouling on the hull. On a used boat, look at the welds around the transom and the outboard bracket, and at the hull bottom for dents from slipways and canal walls. A teak deck wants occasional cleaning and oil, and the bimini fabric and seat cushions fade in the sun, so a boat stored under shelter in winter usually looks younger. Many of these boats spend summer on a busy mooring, so fenders and rubbing strakes tell a story too. For the electric versions, ask about battery age and charging habits.
