Verga Plast is a small family yard from Lomazzo in the province of Como. Giancarlo Verga founded it in 1958, and since 2023 the boat business has traded as Verga 1958. The name became famous for its see-through tenders, whose polycarbonate hulls let you watch the lake or seabed as you motor along, but the range also takes in trimarans, round bilged displacement launches and V-hulled boats. The construction is distinctive: two moulded shells with closed cell polyurethane foam injected between them, which the yard says makes the boats unsinkable and tolerant of knocks. They are meant as tenders and small boats for poking about.
Our model records list two designs, both motorboats and both from the seventies. The Larianella measures 2.85 metres, the Lario 3.2 metres, and each is listed from 1972 to 1980. Neither reaches the most recent build years, although the Larianella name has returned to the yard's current range as a 2.80 metre boat. Today's Lario 420, at 4.22 metres, is a noticeably bigger boat than the Lario in our records. An owner of one of these older boats is therefore running a tender that is well over forty years old, usually with a small outboard on the transom.
A foam filled double hull ages differently from a single skin. Water can find its way into the foam through cracked fittings or old drain plugs, and a boat that feels heavier than it should is worth a closer look. Check the joint between the two shells, the transom where the outboard bolts on, and the condition of any rubbing strakes. Small tenders like these spend much of their life being dragged up beaches and lifted onto davits, so the keel line and the bow take the most wear. On the plus side, a sound example needs little more than a wash, a light polish and a serviced outboard.
