Boat insurance for Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore is 65 kilometres long, 372 metres deep and Italy's second largest lake; its northern end with Locarno and Ascona lies in Switzerland. The wind runs to a clock: the Tramontana from the north in the morning, the gentler Inverna from the south in the afternoon. The level is managed at the southern outlet near Sesto Calende: record lows in dry summers, water in the towns after heavy rain. Damage happens under the hull when a berth runs shallow.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October, berths are in the upper price band, and permanent moorings afloat are so scarce that a new harbour is being built on the Swiss shore. Boats winter ashore at a yard on the lake; covered space is rare. If you are offered a berth, ask for the depth alongside at low water rather than at the normal level.
What this means for your policy
The lake falls under the cruising range for Lake Garda and the Italian lakes. A motorboat over 2.50 metres needs its own plate from the lake basin authority here, and the application asks for proof of insurance, so keep the certificate to hand. Two questions for your policy: does the agreed cruising range run past the national border in the middle of the lake, and how is a grounding at low water treated?
