Furia S.A. was a sailing yacht builder in Barcelona, also listed in reference sources as Dresport, short for Drassanes Esportives S.A. Its most familiar design is the Furia 44, a fast offshore cruiser drawn by Michel Joubert of the French office Joubert/Nivelt. Born in the era of the IOR rating rule, she pairs racing lines with an interior meant for passages: masthead sloop rig, fin keel and a spade rudder. The hull is hand laid in glassfibre with Kevlar, the deck is a sandwich with teak in the cockpit. Buyers could choose between a shallow winged keel and a deep fin, and between two interior layouts. Outside Spain the boats are a rare sight.
Our model records list four designs, all sailing yachts. The Furia 26 starts in 1979 and, at 8.33 metres, is the smallest. The Furia 1000 at 10.4 metres and the Furia 44 follow in 1980, the Furia 32 at 10.25 metres in 1982. The Furia 44 is both the largest at 13.38 metres and the longest-lived line, recorded until 1993, while the other three end in 1991. Together they span almost fifteen years and run from a small cruiser to a proper offshore yacht. No line reaches the most recent build years, so every Furia on the market today has more than three decades behind her.
An older Furia rewards a careful survey. A hand-laid hull with Kevlar should be checked for osmosis and for any delamination around the keel root, and a spade rudder deserves a close look at its bearings and stock. Standing rigging of this age has usually been renewed at least once; if the paperwork cannot show it, plan for it. The teak in the cockpit and on the coachroof may be thin after decades of scrubbing. On the 44 it is worth confirming which keel is fitted, since the shallow winged version and the deep fin change both draft and handling. Many of these yachts have spent their lives in Spanish waters and come with a local sailing history.
