Ginger Racing LTD; cover, cost and conditions

Ginger Racing is the name behind Gingerboats Racing Ltd, a British boatbuilder with a workshop near Keswick in Cumbria. Phil Hodgkins set the business up late in 2011, and Alex Leonard later joined him as a director. The workshop builds dinghies, combining traditional methods with modern design and construction. It made its name with wooden GP14s and also builds boats of the Solo class. More recently the team has taken on manufacture of the RS200 for RS Sailing and of Solo hulls for Rooster. The GP14 itself is a two person dinghy drawn by Jack Holt in 1949. A Ginger GP14 often gives itself away through its timber: varnished planking and trim on a boat built to tight class rules.

Our model records list a single design for the brand, the GP14, entered as a sailing boat of 4.27 metres. It appears from 2019 onwards and the line reaches into the most recent build years, so the boat is in current production. Other boats such as the Solo or the RS200 are not listed under this name in our records. The length follows from the class, since a GP14 measures 14 feet. That puts it among the dinghies that travel on a light road trailer and go into the water on a launching trolley. A Ginger GP14 is therefore a young boat, built for a club racing fleet as much as for an afternoon on a lake.

A wooden dinghy rewards steady care. Keep the varnish intact, because bare timber takes up water quickly, and store the boat under a fitted tarpaulin with air moving underneath. Check the centreboard case, the transom fittings and the gunwales for knocks after each season of racing. On a second hand GP14, look at the class measurement papers, the age of the sails and the state of the trolley and road trailer. A boat that has raced hard may still be sound, but loose fittings and soft spots in the floor tell their own story.
