Worth knowing

Hansa Sailing Systems Pty Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Hansa Sailing Systems is an Australian maker of small sailing boats built around the idea of universal design: boats that ask little physical strength, feel unthreatening and can be sailed by almost anyone. For decades they have been a familiar sight in sailing for people with disabilities, and they are just as much at home in youth and beginner courses. The most familiar is the Hansa 303, once called the Access 303 and recognised by World Sailing as an international class. Hansa boats are easy to pick out: helm and crew sit low and face forward in moulded seats, the boom sits high, and a ballasted centreboard makes them very hard to capsize. Joystick control with electric servo drives is available.

Our model records list nine designs, all small sailing boats. The Hansa 303 at 3.03 metres is listed from 2014 to 2018. The other eight carry four digit numbers from the Hansa 1020 to the Hansa 1091 and start in 2015; all eight run into the most recent build years. Four of them, the 1020, 1025, 1030 and 1045, measure 2.3 metres, the Hansa 1040 matches the 303 at 3.03 metres and the Hansa 1060 is 3.6 metres. At the top end the Hansa 1090 and 1091 reach 5.8 metres each. Seven of the nine stay under four metres.

These boats lead busy lives in sailing schools and clubs, often launched and hauled out several times a day. On a used boat, check the hull bottom and the centreboard case for wear from slipways and trolleys, and make sure the ballast in the board is secure. Seats and harness points should be firm. Where a boat has servo or joystick control, ask for the service record of the electrics and battery, since salt water is hard on connectors. The rig is simple, but sheaves, control lines and the furling gear deserve a look before the first sail.
