Worth knowing
Harley Racing Yachts Limited; cover, cost and conditions
Harley Racing Yachts, often referred to as Harley Raceboats, comes from Cowes on the Isle of Wight and is described in the sources as a race boat specialist. The yard built designs from several naval architects. The Reflex 38 was drawn by Christian Stimson: fin keel with lead bulb, spade rudder and fractional rig, a cruiser-racer that saw offshore racing and was relaunched in 2004 as the Pronavia 38 with a more homely interior. For the Corby 25, Harley took moulds in 2000 from a one-off that John Corby had built for an owner in Dublin, built three boats and then sent the moulds to Latvia. The Hip 30 could be ordered as a grand prix boat, with teak deck and leather upholstery, or in a simpler fit-out.
Our model records list seven designs, all filed as sailing yachts. The earliest entries are the Reflex 28 and Reflex 38 from 1996. Then come the Corby 25 from 1998, the Hip 30 from 2002, the Corby 33 from 2004 and the Bull 7000 and Continental from 2005. The Reflex 38 ends in 2005, all other lines run to 2012, and none reaches the most recent build years. Lengths sit close together: the Bull 7000 at 7.5 metres and the Corby 25 at 7.7 metres are the smallest, the Reflex 28 measures 8.47, the Hip 30 and Continental 9.15 and 9.25, and the Corby 33 exactly 10 metres. The largest is the Reflex 38 at 11.58 metres.
Boats built for racing tend to have been sailed hard, so a used Harley needs a thorough look. Keel bolts and the area around the keel root deserve attention, since bulb keels carry high loads and a grounding can leave hidden damage. Spade rudders should be checked for play in the bearings and for water in the blade. Fractional rigs with running backstays or swept spreaders depend on correct tune, so the age of the standing rigging matters. The sail wardrobe is often worth as much attention as the hull: an older boat with a tired inventory will need new sails before it can race again.
