Hartley Boats is a dinghy builder from Derby in the English Midlands, started by Kestrel sailors with the Kestrel as its first boat. Today it builds a wide spread of British class dinghies, including Ian Proctor's Wayfarer, Wanderer and Gull, which Hartley took over and updated, and it developed the Supernova and the Mk4 Osprey further. Its own boats carry the H prefix. You spot a Hartley by the class insignia on the sail, and because each boat follows its class rules, a new hull races against older ones from other builders.
Our model records list 21 Hartley designs, all sailing dinghies. The Wayfarer appears in four versions (Cruiser, Mk IV, Racer, Trainer), the Byte in three (CI, CII, Trainer) and the own H series as H 10, H 12, H 12.2 and H 15. Add the 10 Tender, two Wanderer entries and the Blaze, Contender, Gull, Kestrel, Osprey, Rebel Skiff and Supernova. The Kestrel opens the list in 1997, and 17 lines reach the latest build years. Lengths run from 2.94 metres (H 10 and 10 Tender) to 5.35 metres (Osprey).
These are club and family dinghies: rigged in the dinghy park, launched off a trolley and sailed on lakes, reservoirs and sheltered coast. A Wayfarer is roomy enough for cruising and training, while the Contender and the Rebel Skiff reward fit, active sailors. Keep the boat on a padded trolley with a tight top tarp, check the shrouds and the gooseneck each spring, and dry the sails before folding.
