Helsingborg Båtbyggeri is the yard behind the Gambler yachts, built in the Swedish port of Helsingborg on the Øresund. Its boats were glassfibre cruiser-racers, meant for passage-making as much as for club racing. The lines came from two Swedish designers. Rolf Magnusson, from Karlstad, drew the Gambler 35, a masthead sloop with a fin keel, a skeg-hung rudder and lead ballast. Peter Norlin designed the Gambler 38, a fractional sloop with a fin keel and a spade rudder. Both carry the look of Scandinavian cruisers of their time: a low deck, a slim coachroof and generous ballast.
Our model records hold two designs, both sailing yachts. The Gambler 35 appears with build years 1977 to 1992 and measures 10.8 metres. The Gambler 38 follows with build years 1980 to 1998 at 11.58 metres. Between them the two lines span a little over twenty years, and neither reaches into recent production. The difference in length is small, the difference in rig is not: masthead on the 35, fractional on the 38. Anyone looking for a Gambler today will find one only on the used market.
A Gambler of this age rewards a careful survey. Look at the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull, and on the 35 check the skeg and its rudder bearing; on the 38 the spade rudder stock deserves the same attention. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced. Decks of the period can soften around fittings, so tap and listen. Sails and electronics have often been renewed over the decades, which makes a good inventory worthwhile. The 35 in particular was drawn for an easy motion on longer passages rather than for outright speed.
