Henningsen & Steckmest builds yachts in Kappeln on the Schlei, the long inlet of the Baltic in northern Germany, and has been devoted to yacht building since 1958. Work is done by hand in a small yard rather than on a production line. The Scalar name dates from the seventies. Rolf Steckmest, who had joined his father's business, drew a small cruising yacht in 1973 for his shipbuilding examination and named it after the angelfish, known in German as Skalar, that was his favourite in the aquarium. The Scalar 28 was built first in wood, later in glassfibre, and had its first class regatta in 1979.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts and both 8.6 metres long. The Scalar 28 appears with build years 1970 to 1991, and the line recorded simply as Scalar with 1976 to 1984. That the records start earlier than the 1973 drawing may come down to how individual boats were dated; for any given boat, the registration papers decide. Neither line reaches recent build years. The larger Scalar 34, 36 and 40 that the yard builds or refits today are not listed under this name in our records.
A wooden Scalar 28 is a different proposition from a glassfibre one. On a planked hull, check the planking for soft wood along the seams and at the stem, look at the frames in the bilge, and see how the deck meets the hull. Teak decks laid on plywood can let water into the ply below. On glassfibre boats the usual points apply: keel bolts, rudder bearings and chainplates. Since the yard still works on Scalars, owners of older boats have somewhere to turn for refits and advice.
