Henningsen & Steckmest is based at Kappeln-Grauhöft on the Schlei, the long inlet of the Baltic in Schleswig-Holstein, and dates back to 1958. The Scalar series has been built there since 1973 to drawings by Rolf Steckmest, and the brothers Hauke and Malte Steckmest now run the yard in the third generation. The yard does an unusual amount itself: whole tree trunks arrive on site and are turned into deck beams and parts of the superstructure. Deck and cockpit are built in wood the traditional way, using mahogany, abachi, teak and marine plywood. That is how a Scalar stands out on a pontoon: plenty of timber on deck, clean lines and a coachroof that looks hand built.

The Scalar 31 at 9.32 metres comes first, from 1978, followed by the Scalar 36 at eleven metres from 1982, the Scalar 34 /34C at 10.3 metres from 1993 and the Scalar 36 DS, also eleven metres, from 1995. The largest yacht is the Scalar 40/40DS at 11.99 metres, listed from 2007. The odd one out is the Scalar Speedster /Speedster Sun, a 6.25 metre motorboat in the records since 2010. A boat with this much wood on deck rewards regular attention. Varnish and oil on coamings, handrails and coachroof want renewing before the timber greys, and the seams of a laid deck are worth checking each spring. On an older Scalar 31 or 36, look closely at where fittings pass through the deck, since that is where moisture finds its way in. Because the yard still builds the same lines, owners can often get parts and advice for older boats. Most Scalars are used for coastal cruising on the Baltic, with the Speedster as a fast day boat.
