Hero Båt; cover, cost and conditions
Hero Båt stands for sailing yachts from Norway. The hulls were moulded in glassfibre by Hero Marin, a business that today runs a yard with winter storage at Nesbru near Oslo. The well-known Hero designs came from the civil engineer Eivind Amble. The Hero 101 was his breakthrough as a sailboat designer: a quick, seaworthy cruiser made for open water. The Hero 114 grew out of a competition run by the Norwegian magazine Seilas to find the ideal cruising boat. Both are familiar names in Norway, not least through the crew of Sorgenfri, who sailed their Hero 101 around the world.
Our model records hold two designs, both sailing yachts. The Hero 101 is listed with build years 1972 to 1984 at 10.2 metres. The Hero 114 CS follows with 1983 to 1989 at 11.58 metres, so the number in the name roughly gives the length in decimetres. The two lines overlap by only two build years, the 114 CS being the larger of the two. Neither reaches recent build years, so any Hero on offer today is a used yacht.
Many Hero yachts have done serious mileage, and some have crossed oceans. Before buying, look at the chainplates and their attachment to the hull, the condition of the standing rigging and the rudder bearings. Hulls from the seventies may show osmosis, and deck hardware bedded long ago often leaks. Boats prepared for long passages tend to carry wind vanes, extra tankage and heavy ground tackle, which is useful kit but adds weight and needs checking too. A well-documented refit history is worth a great deal on a boat of this age.
