Het Fort; cover, cost and conditions
Het Fort is the name of the yard run by Jachtwerf De Vries Lentsch in the Netherlands, located at Nieuwendam on the edge of Amsterdam. The Fortuna yachts came out of this yard, drawn by De Vries Lentsch themselves. A Fortuna 41 from 1964, offered by a Dutch broker, shows how they were put together: a steel hull, a teak laid deck, a wooden superstructure and a long full keel. She measures 12.50 metres overall with a beam of 3.60 metres and a draught of 1.55 metres, displaces about 15 tonnes and carries 3 tonnes of ballast. Below decks the joinery is classic mahogany. Steel below, timber above and a long keel underneath make a Fortuna easy to pick out in a marina.
Our model records hold seven designs, every one of them filed as a sailing yacht. Five belong to the Fortuna range: the Fortuna 41 at 12.5 metres, the Fortuna 43 MS at 11.5, the Fortuna 46 at 14.15, the Fortuna 49 MS at 13.9 and the Fortuna 54 at 15.67 metres. Two large motorsailers complete the list, the Motorsegler 63 and the Motorsegler DWL 47, both 18.97 metres long. The earliest build year is 1965 for the DWL 47, which runs until 1972. The other six designs continue to 1978, while the two MS versions only start in 1971. None reaches the recent build years. The 1964 boat on the market predates the first Fortuna 41 year in our records, which is 1967.
A steel yacht of this age lives or dies by what happens under the paint. Rust tends to start where water lies: beneath a teak deck, around fittings and in the bilge, so an ultrasonic thickness survey of the plating is money well spent before buying. Where a wooden deckhouse meets a steel deck, the joint needs regular attention. The engine is often a decades old diesel, so service history and spare parts matter. Many of these boats were built for comfortable long passages rather than racing, and their full keels give them a steady motion at sea, at the price of slower manoeuvring in tight harbours.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
