Hinterhoeller Yachts was a Canadian yard that built glassfibre sailing boats, latterly at St. Catharines in Ontario. George Hinterhoeller trained as a wooden boatbuilder in Austria, emigrated to Canada in the early fifties and was building boats of his own at Niagara-on-the-Lake from 1956. In 1959 he drew and built the Shark 24, first in wood and later in glassfibre, with a cast iron fin keel and a displacement remarkably light for its day; it was also built under licence in Europe. In 1969 his business became part of the newly formed C&C Yachts. He left in 1975 and started again under his own name at St. Catharines in 1977. That second chapter produced the Nonsuch, a catboat with one sail on a mast stepped right forward, named after the first trading ship of the Hudson's Bay Company. The yard closed in November 1995.

None of them reaches the recent build years, since the yard has been gone for three decades, so every Hinterhoeller afloat today has a long history behind it.
Age shapes how these boats should be looked after. On a Shark 24 the cast iron keel deserves attention: rust weeping at the keel joint or around the bolts is worth investigating before it spreads. Glassfibre hulls of the seventies can show osmosis blisters, and decks of that era sometimes hide soft patches around stanchions and fittings, so a moisture meter and a careful tap along the deck tell a buyer a lot. A Nonsuch carries all its sail on one mast far forward, which puts real load on the mast step and the deck where the spar passes through; both are places to inspect closely. The Shark has a racing past and many are still raced in club fleets, so old sails and worn running rigging are common. Smaller boats like the Shark and the Cygnus often travel by road, which makes the condition of the trailer part of any purchase.
