Honnor Marine Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Honnor Marine of Totnes in Devon is best known as the builder of the Drascombe boats. In 1968 John Watkinson, who designed the Drascombe Lugger, gave the firm a sole licence to build it in GRP, and the first GRP Lugger appeared at the London Boat Show the following year. Honnor went on to build further Watkinson designs such as the Drifter, Scaffie and Gig, until the company was wound up in 1997 and its assets sold.

Our records hold 12 Honnor Marine entries, eleven sailing boats and one sailing yacht, the Gig. Several types appear twice, with and without the Drascombe prefix: the Longboat three times, the Coaster and Drifter twice each, alongside the Dabber, Devon Lugger, Gig, Scaffie and the Oceanbird Trimaran MK 1. Build years start in 1968 with the Oceanbird and end in 2012 with the Dabber and Devon Lugger. Lengths run from the 4.5 metre Scaffie to the 9.25 metre Oceanbird Trimaran.

Drascombes are built for creek crawling and beach landings. They draw little, carry a crew comfortably and are happiest pulled up on shingle at lunchtime. Most live on a trailer, so wheel bearings and the winch strap need as much attention as the rig. Wooden spars and trim want varnish, sails like to be dried before bagging, and the outboard well should be flushed after salt water.
