Hummingbird Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Hummingbird Yachts was based in Poole on the south coast of England, and some records name Peter Webster Ltd as the builder. The name belongs to the Hummingbird 30, a glassfibre cruising yacht built from the late seventies into the early eighties. David Thomas drew her as a variation on his Elizabethan 30. Underwater body, keel and rudder are the same, while a slightly taller coachroof that runs further aft gives more headroom and interior space. The transom was also altered a little to lengthen the cockpit. So the Hummingbird is the cruising sister of a well regarded racer, recognisable by her bulkier coachroof on a familiar hull.
Our model records list one design, the Hummingbird 30 sailing yacht, with build years from 1978 to 1984 and a length of 9.14 metres, just under the thirty feet of her name. She is sloop rigged with a little over 40 square metres in main and genoa. Most boats have a fin keel with a skeg hung rudder, and only a handful were built with bilge keels. Below there is a forecabin and a saloon with six berths in all, a galley, a U shaped dinette, a chart table and quarter berths on both sides. No further lines from the yard appear in our records, and every boat listed is now more than forty years old.
Because she shares her underwater shape with the Elizabethan 30, a Hummingbird 30 sails well for a cruiser of her size and stays comfortable in a seaway. On a boat of this age look first at the skeg and rudder fittings, then at the keel bolts and the hull for osmosis. Chainplates and standing rigging may well be original and due for renewal. The larger coachroof means more windows, and their seals often leak by now. A rare bilge keel version can dry out on a mooring, which suits tidal harbours on the English coast. Sails, engine and electrics are where previous owners have spent, or saved, their money.

Series by Hummingbird Yachts, build years and cover
Hummingbird 30 is a sailing yacht from Hummingbird Yachts, built from 1978 to 1984.
For the Hummingbird 30 by Hummingbird Yachts series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Hummingbird 30 by Hummingbird Yachts series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
